If you own a local business, your Google Business Profile (GBP) is likely your most valuable piece of digital real estate. It’s what puts you in the coveted “Map Pack” on page one of Google.

But recently, many business owners are seeing their profiles pushed down the rankings —or worse, suspended completely. If your phone isn’t ringing from Google Maps, you might be making one of these 5 common mistakes:

1. Keyword Stuffing Your Business Name.

It’s tempting to add extra words to your profile name to rank better. For example, if your legal name is John’s Septic Inc., you might try naming your profile John’s Septic Service & Evaluations Blue Ridge. Don’t do it. While some marketers use this trick, Google considers this “keyword stuffing.” It can lower your ranking or trigger an immediate reverification suspension. Stick to your exact legal name, and optionally, your city if absolutely necessary for branding.

2. Selecting the Wrong Primary Category.

According to Google’s local search algorithm, your primary category carries the heaviest direct ranking weight. If you are a bakery but you accidentally choose “grocery store,” or a handyman in Hiawassee who chooses “general contractor,” you are confusing the search engines. You must perform competitive research and select the exact, specific primary category your top three competitors are using.

3. Linking to a Cluttered, Slow Homepage:

Most businesses link their GBP directly to their homepage. But to optimize your profile, Google wants you to embed your reviews and a map on that destination page. Doing this on your main homepage can drastically slow down your load times. The high-value fix? Create a separate, high-speed localized landing page specifically for your map traffic.

4. Arguing in the Review Section.

Reviews are critical, but how you manage them matters just as much. First, you need a system to ask for reviews within 48 hours of service (and suggest they use location keywords, like mentioning your “Gilmer County” location). Second, keep responses short! Your responses are not a blog or Facebook argument. Keep it brief, say thank you, and never argue with a customer publicly.

5. The “Set It and Forget It” Mentality:

Setting up your profile and never touching it again is a massive mistake. Google wants to see active, fresh updates. A great workaround is to connect your WordPress blog directly to your GBP using an RSS feed tool like Deliver.it. This allows you to write a localized post on your site and automatically distribute it to your GBP, keeping your profile active without extra daily work.
